When four country artists then came together
For an album they called "Highwaymen"
They showed me and some other people
What four country legends still can
Johnny & Kris & Waylon & Willie
They always were idols for me
Johnny, he sang "I Walk The Line"
And his old "Folsom Prison Blues"
When I heard that Johnny Cash died
I knew what this world had to lose
Kris wrote a song about Bobby McGee
And gave Janis Joplin a hit
All that he wrote was some poetry
While using words like "dogshit"
Johnny & Kris & Waylon & Willie
They always were idols for me
Waylon invented the outlaw movement
Way back in the Seventies
With his friend Willie and his wife Jessi
He brought Texas to Tennessee
Willie became the King of the Outlaws
With his special voice and his style
He said he'll die some night on the stage
But I hope he'll still live for a while
Johnny & Kris & Waylon & Willie
They always were idols for me
They always were idols for me
