Merle Haggards frühe Songs kamen durchaus
auch bei den Hippies und den Linken gut an,
schliesslich war da einer, der im Gefängnis war,
der untendurch musste und der über soziale Pro-
bleme sang. Und dann das: Mit seinem Song
"Okie From Muskogee" verscherzte "Hag" es
sich für immer mit den Hippies. Dabei wollte er
den Song als Witz verstanden haben, sich über
die konservativen Rednecks lustig machen. Die-
se erhoben ihn nun ihrerseits zu ihrem grossen
Helden, ein Image, das er nie mehr los wurde.
